PostNord is the leading provider of communication and logistics solutions to, from, and within the Nordic region. The company provides postal services to private and businesses in Sweden and Denmark and operates as a logistics and freight distributor in all Nordic countries.
The company’s strategic goal is to be a leader in parcel distribution and e-commerce, and to run a sustainable, demand-driven mail delivery business.
Industry: Postal Services
Location: Sweden
Challenges:
The AI robot was to take over tasks previously done manually by two employees, such as singulating parcels ranging from small packages to bundles weighing up to 7 kg from a moving bulk stream and placing them on an induction belt. It also had to sort out non-conveyable items. Furthermore, the robot needed to be installed in a very small space within the existing Rosersberg mail center, all within a short timeframe.
Solutions Implemented:
We deployed our highly efficient VarioPick robotic solution for dynamic picking. The system includes a sophisticated AI-based vision system for accurate item identification. In addition, a pusher ensures seamless removal. PostNord also integrated a container tipper to enhance overall functionality.
Benefits:
The daily operation accommodates three shifts: two for bulk-stream items and one for bundles. The VarioPick replaces two manual workstations, providing a sorting capacity of up to 2,000 parcels per hour for bulk-stream items and 600 bundles per hour. It handles a wide range of consignments, including both bulk-stream items and bundles, with dimensions ranging from 120x50x5 mm to 350x450x250 mm, and weights from 0.05 to 3 kg for parcels and up to 7 kg for bundles. The system was successfully tested during the peak season of Christmas 2023.
