The typical restaurant model has been anything but that over the past few months, with many restaurants being closed or open only for pickup or delivery. As a result, there has been a higher-than-normal demand for chilled food products, whether refrigerated or frozen.

At the same time, cold storage facilities are encountering new challenges and costs related to ensuring social distancing on the production line and the need to supply workers with personal protective equipment.

From a trend perspective, the cold storage supply chain is chock full of contradiction and conflict, depending on the commodities and the region. In many areas of the world, for instance, there are no laws regarding cold chain management. In other, more advanced regions, automated mobile robots (AMR) and other technology is becoming more commonplace.

Körber’s next Master Class series, Cold Storage Trends, will delve into a range of interesting topics – from continuous improvement to meet consumer demands to the challenges of keeping up with constantly evolving food traceability and food safety regulations and how technologies like AMR and voice in cold storage are on the rise.

The series is broken down into succinct, easily digestible 30-minute segments that take place from 12-12:30 p.m. EDT over five sessions. Check out the lineup:

  • June 9 – Cold storage and e-grocers: Changing environments – Since consumers are increasingly shopping for groceries online, the cold storage supply chain must adapt to meet increasing consumer expectations
  • June 11 – Traceability and food safety in cold storage – Learn how food safety issues affect public health and how food traceability requirements are constantly changing
  • June 16 – Labor recruitment challenges in cold storage – It’s no secret that attracting and retaining labor is difficult enough for warehouses, but it’s even tougher to find and keep employees willing to work in a harsh, frigid warehouse environment
  • June 18 – Improve energy efficiency in cold storage warehouses – Energy efficiency in cold storage affects the bottom line and when optimized, can increase profits, competitiveness and client-facing capabilities
  • June 23 – How does automation drive cold storage efficiencies – Automation in cold storage facilities can drive energy consumption down, reduce dependency on manpower and provide better use of vertical space – among other benefits

Host Thomas Goldsby, Professor and Chair of Logistics at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business, will introduce each half-hour session. He will then turn the floor over to a speaker well-versed in the day’s topic, followed by a brief Q&A. And if you are unable to attend a session, want to replay or share it with others afterward, a recording will be made available right after the presentation.
